Vun SokChan is a 3-year-old girl who was born with severe clubfoot in her right foot. She lives with mother and father live in village Nº3, Svayprateal Commune, Saang District, Kandal Province. Her parents are both farmers and they are every poor.
When SokChan was born in September 2007, her family noticed the deformity in her right foot. A midwife told the family to bring their baby to Kien Khleang Rehabilitation Center to get help. Right away, SokChan’s family brought her to center for treatment. The family’s hope was that SokChan would one day be able to walk like any other normal child.
A physical assessment classified SokChan with Varus Equines, a severe form of Club Foot. After a series of plaster treatments under the guidance of a physiotherapist, SokChan was referred to the National Pediatric Hospital for Tenotomy surgery. The Surgery was a great success. SokChan was given a series of castings for 3 weeks and needed to wear the Steenbeek foot abduction brace (SFAB) during both day and night for 3 months. After these three months, she only had to wear the brace only at night. After a year of treatment, her foot was corrected and she was able to walk on her own without any brace.
SokChan and her family were grateful to have received this very personalized treatment. “I would like to thank VI and the donors for supporting and taking very good care of my child,” said SokChan’s mother during the Site Manager visit in January 2009.
